Is the seismic moment-frequency relation universal? [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 2000
SUMMARY We evaluate the seismic moment‐frequency relation for the Harvard catalogue in the period 1977‐1994. This catalogue is composed of about 12 000 earthquakes. After selection of events in terms of depth and energy, we retain about 8000 data points.

Seismic and Aseismic Cycle of the Ecuador–Colombia Subduction Zone

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2021
The Colombia–Ecuador subduction zone is an exceptional natural laboratory to study the seismic cycle associated with large and great subduction earthquakes.

Match Compliance of Conventional Design Codes with Instructions for Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings in Performance Evaluation of Steel Moment Frames [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Structural and Construction Engineering, 2019
Today, instructions for seismic rehabilitation of existing buildings are widely used for seismic performance evaluation of existing buildings. Moreover, nonlinear structural analysis methods are permitted for seismic design of new buildings in recent ...

Seismic Performance of RC Moment Frame Buildings Considering SSI Effects: A Case Study of the New Venezuelan Seismic Code

open access: yesBuildings, 2023
The Soil–Structure Interaction (SSI) effect has been widely evidenced during several earthquakes around the world. In the Venezuelan context, the seismic event in Caracas in 1967 showed the significant consequences of designing buildings without ...

Fatigue behaviors of the steel pipe tee in a nuclear power plant piping system under in-plane cyclic loading

open access: yesEnergy Reports, 2020
The safety of a nuclear power plant against earthquakes can be improved by installing seismic isolation devices. As such seismic isolation devices handle seismic loads, however, displacements larger than those generated before the application of such ...

Seismic Moment Evolution During Hydraulic Stimulations [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2020
AbstractAnalysis of past and present stimulation projects reveals that the temporal evolution and growth of maximum observed moment magnitudes may be linked directly to the injected fluid volume and hydraulic energy. Overall evolution of seismic moment seems independent of the tectonic stress regime and is most likely governed by reservoir specific ...

Consistency between a strain rate model and the ESHM20 earthquake rate forecast in Europe: insights for seismic hazard [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences
This work aims at investigating the consistency between a strain rate model and a long-term earthquake forecast at the European scale. We take advantage of the release of geodetic strain rate models by Piña-Valdés et al.

Spatial distribution of scalar seismic moment release in Italy (1983-1996): seismotectonic implications for the Apennines

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 1997
We analyzed the distribution of seismic moment in Italy, computed from instrumental seismicity recorded by the Italian National Seismic Network in the past 14 years, to map the areas where seismic deformation processes have been active in this time ...

Seismic moment distribution [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 1991
SUMMARY We review possible errors in determining the size of earthquakes. We propose that the size distribution can be effectively defined only for earthquake sequences, not for ‘individual’ earthquakes. As a result of the error analysis, we question the validity of many reported correlations between the 6-value and spatio-temporal characteristics of ...

The first-order statistical moment of the seismic moment tensor [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 1985
Summary. If a complex earthquake is assumed to be a set of individual, randomly oriented elementary pure double couple sources, the solution for the seismic moment of the complex event projected on the mean trend of the fault will perforce be comprised of sources of both double couple and compensated linear vector dipole (CLVD) types.
