Reflection seismic waveform tomography [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2009
In seismic waveform tomography, if using reflection data with limited source‐receiver offsets, it is difficult to reconstruct the deep part of the subsurface velocity model. We present two approaches to tackle this problem: layer stripping and weighted updating.

Tomography of the Earth's Core Using Supernova Neutrinos [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
We investigate the possibility to use the neutrinos coming from a future galactic supernova explosion to perform neutrino oscillation tomography of the Earth's core.

Real‐time monitoring of tunnel structures using digital twin and artificial intelligence: A short overview

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
How artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin (DT) technologies are revolutionizing tunnel surveillance, offering proactive maintenance strategies and enhanced safety protocols. It explores AI's analytical power and DT's virtual replicas of infrastructure, emphasizing their role in optimizing maintenance and safety in tunnel management.

Seismic reflection imaging of deep crustal structures via reverse time migration using offshore wide-angle seismic data on the eastern margin of the Sea of Japan

open access: yesEarth, Planets and Space, 2022
We applied reverse time migration (RTM) to offshore wide-angle seismic data acquired with airgun shots and sparsely deployed ocean bottom seismographs (OBSs) for reflection imaging of the Moho discontinuity in the eastern margin of the Sea of Japan ...

An Envelope Travel-Time Objective Function for Reducing Source–Velocity Trade-Offs in Wave-Equation Tomography

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2022
In conventional cross-correlation (CC)-based wave-equation travel-time tomography, wrong source wavelets can result in inaccurate velocity inversion results, which is known as the source–velocity trade-off.

The damage and failure mechanism of prestatically loaded rock during medium‐strain rate cyclic impact loading

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Based on experimental results and theoretical analysis, an established rock damage accumulation model that comprehensively considers the preapplied static load, impact peak value, impact frequency, and impact times. Abstract To study the rock damage mechanism under high static loading and superimposed medium strain rate cyclic impact loading, a series ...

Methodological advances in seismic noise imaging of the Alpine area

open access: yesComptes Rendus. Géoscience
Methodological advances in seismic tomography are often driven by the quality of data sets. The dense and homogeneous spatial coverage of the AlpArray seismic network, including hundreds of permanent and temporary broadband stations, has motivated a ...

The elastic constants of MgSiO3 perovskite at pressures and temperatures of the Earth's mantle

open access: yes, 2009
The temperature anomalies in the Earth's mantle associated with thermal convection1 can be inferred from seismic tomography, provided that the elastic properties of mantle minerals are known as a function of temperature at mantle pressures.

Conditioning bounds for traveltime tomography in layered media [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This paper revisits the problem of recovering a smooth, isotropic, layered wave speed profile from surface traveltime information. While it is classic knowledge that the diving (refracted) rays classically determine the wave speed in a weakly well-posed ...
