Improved seismic envelope full-waveform inversion

Geophysics, 2023
ABSTRACT The envelope full-waveform-inversion method has the potential to greatly improve the estimation of long-wavelength components of subsurface seismic velocity, and simultaneously avoid or reduce inversion cycle skipping, by fitting the envelopes of observed and modeled seismic waveform data, rather than fitting the waveforms ...

Seismic Applications of Full Waveform Inversion

2016
Full waveform inversion (FWI) is a powerful imaging technique which exploits the richness of seismic waveforms. We further developed FWI to obtain multi-parameter images at high resolution. Here, we involve physical parameters, such as velocities and attenuation of seismic waves as well as mass density, which are essential for a reliable petrophysical ...

A combined genetic and linear inversion algorithm for seismic waveform inversion

SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 1993, 1993
We combine a genetic algorithm (GA) with a linearized inversion (LI) scheme to develop a new approach to seismic waveform inversion. By incorporating the LI method into GA we intend (i) to overcome the limitations of the knowledge of a good starting model in LI and (ii) to reduce the computational cost of GA.

Receiver-coupling effects in seismic waveform inversions

Geophysics, 2012
ABSTRACT Seismic waveform-inversion offers opportunities for detailed characterization of the subsurface. However, its full potential can only be exploited when any systematic source and receiver effects are either carefully avoided or appropriately accounted for during the inversions. Repeated crosshole measurements in the Mont Terri

Optimized Experimental Design in the Context of Seismic Full Waveform Inversion and Seismic Waveform Imaging

2017
Abstract During the past few years, significant improvements have been achieved in high-resolution imaging with seismic data. In particular, seismic full waveform inversion (FWI) has been proven to be a very promising tool. However, this technique requires high-quality data, whose acquisition can be very expensive. Furthermore, FWI is computationally

Evaluation of Anelastic Effects in Seismic Waveform Inversions

Proceedings, 2013
The results of a synthetic study on anelastic effects in seismic full waveform inversions are presented. It is shown that the application of a pure acoustic waveform inversion algorithm does not yield satisfactory results when the data to be inverted are acquired in a viscoacoustic medium.

Inversion of travel times and seismic waveforms

1987
The use of gradient methods of optimization allows to solve large-sized least squares inverse problems iteratively. In travel time inversion, each iteration consists on a back-projection of the travel time residuals. In waveform inversion, each iteration consists on a back-propagation of the waveform residuals. This chapter reviews methods developed by

Full Waveform Inversion for Reflected Seismic Data

Proceedings, 2012
Full waveform inversion has been successful in building high resolution velocity models for shallow layers. To achieve this, it requires refracted waves or low frequencies in the reflection/refraction data. To relax the dependence on low frequency reflections, we revisit full waveform inversion.

Full Waveform Inversion with Blended Seismic Data

12th International Congress of the Brazilian Geophysical Society & EXPOGEF, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 15–18 August 2011, 2011
Full waveform inversion has the potential of playing the central role in seismic imaging in the near future. In fact, its power of providing higher seismic resolution compared to pre-stack depth migration may contribute to seismic interpretation in areas which present highly complex geology. However, for complex geological models the success of seismic

Full-waveform Seismic Inversion at Reservoir Depths

Proceedings, 2012
We apply 3D anisotropic acoustic full-waveform tomographic seismic inversion to a North Sea wide-angle OBC dataset, and demonstrate that our recovered velocity model is realistic within the chalk reservoir sequence to depths of up to 4000 m. Because we use predominantly wide-angle refracted arrivals in the inversion, we are able to undershoot and image
