Seismic Imaging of the Southern Vienna Basin (Austria) Using Probabilistic Ambient‐Noise Tomography

open access: yesGeophysical Prospecting, Volume 73, Issue 7, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Surface‐wave ambient noise tomography has proven to be a cost‐effective and reliable tool for imaging sedimentary basins when coupled with dense nodal seismic arrays. Here, we deployed 181 seismic nodes in two asynchronous phases across the southern Vienna Basin in spring 2024. We retrieve fundamental‐mode Rayleigh and Love wave group velocity

Sunspot dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes
This report describes recent results of our theoretical and observational work on dynamical phenomena in sunspots. The overall goal of this research has been a better understanding of the various oscillatory, transient, and steady motions in a sunspot ...

Evaluation and Improvement of the ECMWF Aviation Turbulence Forecasts

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 16, 28 August 2025.
Abstract This study evaluates the performance of the Integrated Forecasting System‐clear‐air turbulence (IFS‐CAT) over a 1‐year period (October 2022–September 2023) using in situ flight eddy dissipation rate (EDR) data. IFS‐CAT ensemble forecasts exhibit the highest skill at z = 6–15 km during the Northern Hemisphere winter, as measured by an area ...

Improved Prediction of Postfire Debris Flows Through Rainfall Anomaly Maps

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 16, 28 August 2025.
Abstract Predicting where runoff‐generated debris flows might occur during rainfall on steep, recently burned terrain is challenging. Studies of mass‐movement processes in unburned areas indicate that event locations are well‐predicted by rainfall anomaly, R*, in which peak observed rainfall is normalized by local rainfall climatology.

Attention‐Based Reconstruction of Full‐Field Tsunami Waves From Sparse Tsunameter Networks

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 16, 28 August 2025.
Abstract We investigate the potential of an attention‐based neural network architecture, the Senseiver, for sparse sensing in tsunami forecasting. Specifically, we focus on the Tsunami Data Assimilation Method, which generates forecasts from tsunameter networks.

Hydration in the Crust and Upper Mantle Near the Extinct Spreading Ridge in the Eastern Sub‐Basin, South China Sea

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 16, 28 August 2025.
Abstract During the final stages of seafloor spreading in the East Sub‐basin of the South China Sea, spreading transitioned from slow to ultraslow before cessation. However, post‐spreading volcanism has obscured the original fabric along or near the extinct spreading ridge (ESR).
