Deep Attenuation Structure of Japan Subduction Zone From Joint Inversion of Local and Teleseismic Data

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 130, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract The first joint inversion of local and teleseismic waveform spectra data is conducted to determine 3‐D P and S wave attenuation (Q) tomography of the Japan subduction zone down to 700 km depth. We develop a novel technique to reliably estimate the corner frequency and attenuation factor from the observed spectra of seismograms.

Learning From Finland: Variability of Subglacial Heat Flow in Greenland Explored From Geological Units and Radiogenic Heat Production

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 130, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract It is well known that geothermal heat flow influences the dynamics of ice sheets. Especially small‐scale variations may lead to strong effects, but are not resolvable in most available models. Here, we establish a relationship between large‐scale radiogenic heat production (RHP) and geological units for Greenland to assess the local ...

Automatic Earthquake Catalogs From a Permanent DAS Offshore Network

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 130, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Applying Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) to sense offshore telecom cables offers a unique opportunity to expand permanent seismological networks far offshore with an unprecedented instrumentation density but presents challenges in managing and processing data.

PKIKP Phase Back‐Projection and Its Application on Southern Hemisphere Earthquake Imaging

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 130, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Standard Back‐Projections (BPs) use P phase recordings at large aperture arrays within teleseismic distances (30°–90°) to image earthquake sources. However, the majority of sizable arrays are in the northern hemisphere, leaving many southern hemisphere earthquakes beyond the teleseismic range.

Preparatory Phase of Major Earthquakes During Campi Flegrei Unrest (2020–2024)

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 130, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract The ongoing unrest at Campi Flegrei is posing significant challenges for hazard assessment and risk mitigation. This densely populated region has experienced more than 20,000 shallow earthquakes since 2020, driven by hydrothermal fluid accumulation beneath a mechanically strong caprock.
