A metabarcoding protocol targeting two DNA regions to analyze root-associated fungal communities in ferns and lycophytes. [PDF]
Abstract Premise Detailed studies of the fungi associated with lycophytes and ferns provide crucial insights into the early evolution of land plants. However, most investigations to date have assessed fern–fungus interactions based only on visual root inspection. In the present research, we establish and evaluate a metabarcoding protocol to analyze the

No phylogenomic support for a Cenozoic origin of the "living fossil" Isoetes. [PDF]
Abstract Premise The isoetalean lineage has a rich fossil record that extends to the Devonian, but the age of the living clade is unclear. Recent results indicate that it is young, from the Cenozoic, whereas earlier work based on less data from a denser taxon sampling yielded Mesozoic median ages.

Comparative Genomics and Phylogenetic Analyses of Aquarius macrophyllus and Related Genera in Alismataceae Based on Plastome Data. [PDF]
We sequenced the plastome of Aquarius macrophyllus and conducted a comparative analysis incorporating eight species from four related genera in Alismataceae. Phylogenetic analysis of Alismataceae elucidated that Alisma and Burnatia species were early diverged, followed by Hydrocleys and Limnocharis. The monophyly of Aquarius and its sister relationship

Thylakoids reorganization enables driving photosynthesis under far-red light in the microalga Nannochloropsis gaditana. [PDF]
Summary Oxygenic photosynthesis is driven by visible light in most photosynthetic organisms, with exceptions in a few cyanobacteria and microalgae species, which can extend the light absorption to far‐red (FR) wavelengths, by synthesizing new pigments or shifting the antennae absorption range beyond 700 nm.

Optimizing efficient PCR‐amplifiable DNA extraction from herbarium specimens
Abstract Premise The objective of this study was to optimize an existing DNA extraction protocol for recalcitrant plant taxa to obtain high‐quality DNA from preserved herbarium tissue suitable for downstream PCR applications. Methods and Results Leaf tissue from 30 diverse plant species was obtained from the U.S. National Arboretum Herbarium.

We report a modular synthesis of unnatural variously substituted derivatives of the natural product selagibenzophenone A. We discovered, that some of the derivatives show promising antiproliferative and potential anti‐inflammatory activity. For both biological effects, the activity of some derivatives is superior to that of the natural compound ...

Our results show that biogeochemical niche conservatism relates to plant species diversification and life form evolution in subtropical forest plants. Furthermore, the strengths of biogeochemical niche conservatism varying among elements and between life forms might be mostly determined by the tempo and mode of OU processes.
