What can lycophytes teach us about plant evolution and development? Modern perspectives on an ancient lineage [PDF]
All Evo‐Devo studies rely on representative sampling across the tree of interest to elucidate evolutionary trajectories through time. In land plants, genetic resources are well established in model species representing lineages including bryophytes ...

Is There a Key Primer for Amplification of Core Land Plant DNA Barcode Regions (rbcL and matK)? [PDF]
We use in silico PCR to select and measure the amplification capability of primer. We tested 366 and 489 published primers for the rbcL and matK regions, respectively, using sequences from 8463 different land plant species. Our results indicate a set of primers that effectively cover all land plant sequences, particularly for the rbcL region.

Evolution of the jasmonate ligands and their biosynthetic pathways
Summary Different plant species employ different jasmonates to activate a conserved signalling pathway in land plants, where (+)‐7‐iso‐JA‐Ile (JA‐Ile) is the ligand for the COI1/JAZ receptor in angiosperms and dn‐cis‐OPDA, dn‐iso‐OPDA and Δ4‐dn‐iso‐OPDA act as ligands in Marchantia polymorpha.

Summary Ferns appear in the fossil record some 200 Myr before angiosperms. However, as angiosperm‐dominated forest canopies emerged in the Cretaceous period there was an explosive diversification of modern (leptosporangiate) ferns, which thrived in low, blue‐enhanced light beneath angiosperm canopies.

Summary Furanocoumarins (FCs) are plant‐specialized metabolites with potent allelochemical properties. The distribution of FCs is scattered with a chemotaxonomical tendency towards four distant families with highly similar FC pathways. The mechanism by which this pathway emerged and spread in plants has not been elucidated.

Summary Hornworts are crucial to understand the phylogeny of early land plants. The emergence of ‘reverse’ U‐to‐C RNA editing accompanying the widespread C‐to‐U RNA editing in plant chloroplasts and mitochondria may be a molecular synapomorphy of a hornwort–tracheophyte clade.

A Danian subtropical lacustrine palynobiota from South America (Bororó Formation, San Jorge Basin, Patagonia - Argentina) [PDF]
New results on a lacustrine Danian palynological association in extra-andean northern Patagonia (lower member of the Cerro Bororó Formation, San Jorge Basin, Chubut province, Argentina) are presented.
