Selected Macroscopic Consequences of Tetrahedratic Order

Ferroelectrics, 2005
We discuss for tetrahedratic phases a number of cross-coupling terms not considered before and we analyse their macroscopic physical consequences. In particular we show that if a tetrahedratic phase is acted on by an electric field that is perpendicular to a temperature gradient, an electric current perpendicular to both forces results.

Genomic consequences of selection on self-incompatibility genes

Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 2008
Frequency-dependent selection at plant self-incompatibility systems is inherent and well understood theoretically. A self-incompatibility locus leads to a strong peak of diversity in the genome, to a unique distribution of diversity across the species and possibly to increased introgression between closely related species.

Candidate selection and its behavioral consequences

Electoral Studies
The rules by which parties select their candidates are important, not only because they determine the policy and leaders of a party. Candidate selection, the identity of those taking the final decision (selectorate), has been found to impact the behavior of parliamentarians around the world (e.g. Preece, 2014; Sieberer, 2006).

Consequences of eye movements for spatial selectivity

Current Biology
What determines spatial tuning in the visual system? Standard views rely on the assumption that spatial information is directly inherited from the relative position of photoreceptors and shaped by neuronal connectivity.1,2 However, human eyes are always in motion during fixation,3,4,5,6 so retinal neurons receive temporal modulations that depend on the

The selection and consequences of job comparisons

Organizational Behavior and Human Performance, 1982
Abstract This study focused on two related research problems: first, the extent to which employees compare and contrast the complexity of their jobs to the job complexity of referents; and second, the consequences of this comparison for employees' job satisfaction, motivation, and performance effectiveness.

Simple growth laws and selection consequences

Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 1991
It is commonly thought that various types of population growth can be satisfactorily modelled as deviations from an inherently exponential (malthusian) growth law. Consideration of kinetic results from research on the origin of life, laser physics and more-conventional population dynamics makes it clear, however, that in certain cases the simplest and ...

The moral consequences of social selection

Behaviour, 2014
For half a century explaining human altruism has been a major research focus for scholars in a wide variety of disciplines, yet answers are still sought. Here, paradigms like reciprocal altruism, mutualism, and group selection are set aside, to examine the effects of social selection as an under-explored model.

War Initiation and Selection by Consequences

Journal of Peace Research, 1996
Abstract Two data sets for interstate wars between 1495 and 1815, and between 1816 and 1990, were examined to determine how a nation's tendency to initiate a war depended on its history of winning or losing previous wars. In both data sets, the proportion of wars initiated by a nation increased with successive wins and decreased with ...
