The fundamental principles of natural selection, survival and adaptation: What characteristics does natural selection consider during adaptation, survival, and reproduction?

open access: yes
<p>Natural selection was first proposed by Mr. Darwin and Mr. Wallace. Natural selection is a process that, during successive generations, leads to the creation of hereditary traits that increase the probability of survival and reproduction of ...

Effects of IGFBP4 deficiency on human preadipocyte proliferation and differentiation through the IGF1R/AKT pathway

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
IGFBP4 knockdown (KD) impairs preadipocyte proliferation and is associated with IGF1R protein downregulation and attenuated AKT phosphorylation. The mechanisms by which IGFBP4 KD influences the IGF1R/AKT signaling pathway involve newly synthesized proteins and lysosomal degradation pathways. Created in BioRender.

BEYOND QUALITY: FIRST PRINCIPLES IN JUDICIAL SELECTION AND THEIR APPLICATION TO A COMMISSION-BASED SELECTION SYSTEM

open access: yes, 2007
This article discusses the principles that the judicial system should advance in the selection of its judges. In addition to judicial quality, there are five other “first principles” that should be advanced in an optimal selection system: independence ...

Projective versions of selection principles

open access: yes, 2010
All spaces are assumed to be Tychonoff. A space X is called projectively P (where P is a topological property) if every continuous second countable image of X is P. Characterizations of projectively Menger spaces X in terms of continuous mappings f:X→Rω,

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Pathways and pitfalls: a qualitative study of student experiences in biomedical science education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biomedical science students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers including financial strain, disrupted laboratory access and cultural exclusion. Peer networks provide vital support when institutional systems are difficult to navigate. To create inclusive learning environments and achieve academic success, educators should blend active, hands‐

Re‐Awakening Public Attention to the Silent Pandemic of Cancer Among Older Adults in Low‐ and Middle‐Income Countries

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As global populations age, cancer is increasingly becoming a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults, particularly in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). Despite accounting for the majority of new cancer cases and deaths, older individuals remain underrepresented in cancer research, clinical guidelines, and health ...

How to read “heritability” in the recipe approach to natural selection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
There are two ways evolution by natural selection (ENS) is conceptualized in the literature. One provides a ‘recipe’ for ENS incorporating three ingredients: variation, differences in fitness and heritability.
