Own song selectivity in the songbird auditory pathway: suppression by norepinephrine. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
BackgroundLike human speech, birdsong is a learned behavior that supports species and individual recognition. Norepinephrine is a catecholamine suspected to play a role in song learning.

Adverse Selection Among Multiple Competing Health Maintenance Organizations [PDF]

open access: yesMedical Care, 1995
This study examines risk selection among nine health plans competing for 16,182 employees of one large firm in 1989: one conventional fee-for-service plan, one group-model health maintenance organization (HMO), and seven network and independent practice model HMOs.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

A hybrid Bi-LSTM model for data-driven maintenance planning

open access: yesAutonomous Intelligent Systems
Modern industries dependent on reliable asset operation under constrained resources employ intelligent maintenance methods to maximize efficiency. However, classical maintenance methods rely on assumed lifetime distributions and suffer from estimation ...

Formoterol versus short-acting beta-agonists as relief medication for adults and children with asthma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background Formoterol is a long-acting beta(2)-agonist but because it has a fast onset of action it can also be used as a relief medication. Objectives To asses the efficacy and safety of formoterol as reliever therapy in comparison to short-acting ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Potential Cellular Functions of Epstein-Barr Nuclear Antigen 1 (EBNA1) of Epstein-Barr Virus

open access: yesViruses, 2013
Epstein-Barr Nuclear Antigen 1 (EBNA1) is a multifunctional protein encoded by EBV. EBNA1’s role in maintaining EBV in latently proliferating cells, by mediating EBV genome synthesis and nonrandom partitioning to daughter cells, as well as ...
