Brain Drain in the Age of Mass Migration: Does Relative Inequality Explain Migrant Selectivity? [PDF]

open access: yes
Brain drain is a core economic policy problem for many developing countries today. Does relative inequality in source and destination countries influence the brain-drain phenomenon?

Orbital-Selectivity-Induced Robust Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Hund’s Metals MgFeP

open access: yes
Ferromagnetic (FM) states with high Curie temperatures (Tc) and strong spin–orbit coupling (SOC) are indispensable for the long-sought room-temperature quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effects.

Overcoming the Pitfalls of Computing Reaction Selectivity from Ensembles of Transition States

open access: yes
The prediction of reaction selectivity is a challenging task for computational chemistry, not only because many molecules adopt multiple conformations, but also due to the exponential relationship between effective activation energies and rate constants.

Construction of direction selectivity in V1: from simple to complex cells

open access: yes, 2011
Despite detailed knowledge about the anatomy and physiology of the primary visual cortex (V1), the immense number of feed-forward and recurrent connections onto a given V1 neuron make it difficult to understand how the physiological details relate to a ...

The effect of temperature on the Fischer-Tropsch selectivity and further mechanistic insights

open access: yes, 2009
Includes bibliographical references (p. 133-145).Concern’s that the world’s energy supply will not be able to keep pace with rising energy demands, have surfaced periodically for much of the petrochemical industry’s nearly 150 year history, but each time

Bounds for Selection

open access: yesSIAM Journal on Computing, 1976
In this paper we show that the minimum number of comparisons necessary for the computation of the kth element of a totally ordered set of size n, $V_k (n)$, is bounded below by $n - k + (k - 1)\lceil \log _2 (n/(k - 1)) \rceil $. For $3 < k < n/4$, this bound is an improvement on the best lower bound presently known.

Laminar dependent orientation selectivity and its dynamics in macaque V1

open access: yes, 2017
PURPOSE: Orientation selective is an emergent property of primary visual cortex (V1). Previous studies have proposed that broadly-tuned suppression or response nonlinearity (power law) may play important roles for sharpening of cortical selectivity. We
