MBE grown microcavities based on selenium and tellurium compounds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In this work, we present three groups of microcavities: based on selenium compounds only, based on tellurium compounds only, and structures based on mixed selenium and tellurium compounds. We focus on their possible applications in the field of optoelectronic devices and fundamental physics (VCSELs, narrow range light sources, studies of cavity ...

Direct MD simulation of liquid-solid phase equilibria for two-component plasmas [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. E 85, 066405 (2012), 2011
We determine the liquid-solid phase diagram for carbon-oxygen and oxygen-selenium plasma mixtures using two-phase MD simulations. We identified liquid, solid, and interface regions using a bond angle metric. To study finite size effects, we perform 27648 and 55296 ion simulations.

Amorphous Selenium Mie Resonators for Infrared Meta-Optics [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Applying direct growth and deposition of optical surfaces holds great promise for the advancement of future nanophotonic technologies. Here, we report on a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique for depositing amorphous selenium (a-Se) spheres by desorption of selenium from Bi2Se3 and re-adsorption on the substrate.

Nano-selenium and its nanomedicine applications: a critical review

open access: yesInternational Journal of Nanomedicine, 2018
Traditional supplements of selenium generally have a low degree of absorption and increased toxicity. Therefore, it is imperative to develop innovative systems as transporters of selenium compounds, which would raise the bioavailability of this element ...

The role of selenium metabolism and selenoproteins in cartilage homeostasis and arthropathies

open access: yesExperimental and Molecular Medicine, 2020
As an essential nutrient and trace element, selenium is required for living organisms and its beneficial roles in human health have been well recognized.

Selenium, antioxidants, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2020
Background Antioxidants have been promoted for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction and for the prevention of cancer. Our preliminary analysis suggested that only when selenium was present were antioxidant mixtures associated with reduced all ...

Germanium, Arsenic, and Selenium Abundances in Metal-Poor Stars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The elements germanium (Ge, Z=32), arsenic (As, Z=33), and selenium (Se, Z=34) span the transition from charged-particle or explosive synthesis of the iron-group elements to neutron-capture synthesis of heavier elements. Among these three elements, only the chemical evolution of germanium has been studied previously.

The Stoichiometry of FeSe [PDF]

open access: yesSol. St. Comm. 149, 1507-1509 2009, 2009
Tetragonal iron selenide, FeSe, the layered parent compound of the recently discovered superconducting arsenide family, has previously been shown to be non magnetic and superconducting with a critical temperature near 8 K. There has, however, been a lack of consensus as to whether selenium vacancies present due to large deviations from ideal ...

Large Second-Harmonic Generation and Linear Electro-Optic Effect in Trigonal Selenium and Tellurium [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. B 100, 035202 (2019), 2019
Trigonal selenium and tellurium crystalize in helical chain-like structures and thus possess interesting properties such as current-induced spin polarization, gyrotropic effects and nonlinear optical responses. By performing systematic ab initio calculations based on density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation plus scissors ...

Zinc, Magnesium, Selenium and Depression: A Review of the Evidence, Potential Mechanisms and Implications

open access: yesNutrients, 2018
Micronutrient deficiency and depression are major global health problems. Here, we first review recent empirical evidence of the association between several micronutrients—zinc, magnesium, selenium—and depression.
