ACTH self-administration in rats
Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 1979The ability of rats to learn a lever pressing response reinforced by a contingent intravenous delivery of ACTH 1--24 and 4--10, was investigated. About 60% of the rats tested learned to press the lever for the two analogues that were infused at a rate of 2.08 microgram per second via a chronically implanted intrajugular catheter.

Methamphetamine self-administration in the cat
Psychopharmacologia, 1976A procedure for studing intravenous drug self-administration in the cat is described. Ten cats were given 24-h access to methamphetamine reinforcement (0.04 mg/kg/inj). The subjects maintained a significantly higher response rate for drug reinforcement than for saline.

Motivation for self-administration of LSD
The Psychiatric Quarterly, 1967The reason for self-administration of LSD and the resulting subjective changes in 34 patients hospitalized following ingestion of LSD were studied. Only two patients were primarily interested in its reputed beneficial effects. Although 13 patients reported such effects, the authors were unable to document any objective improvement.

Although the major reason for discontinuation is menstrual irregularity, the time, expense and inconvenience of clinic visits also pose a barrier to use.

1977Sedative drugs have many of the same effects as alcohol. Taken in high doses, both produce confusion, difficulty in thinking, emotional lability, and motor incoordination (Isbell et al., 1950).
