ENCOURAGING SELF‐ADMINISTRATION OF ERYTHROPOIETIN

EDTNA-ERCA Journal, 2003
SUMMARYEuropean Best Practice Guidelines of 1999 for managing anaemia in patients with kidney failure state that patients using the subcutaneous route should be encouraged to self‐administer epoetin whenever possible. This article argues for and substantiates the need to develop an education programme, which should consist of group and one‐to‐one ...

ACTH self-administration in rats

Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 1979
The ability of rats to learn a lever pressing response reinforced by a contingent intravenous delivery of ACTH 1--24 and 4--10, was investigated. About 60% of the rats tested learned to press the lever for the two analogues that were infused at a rate of 2.08 microgram per second via a chronically implanted intrajugular catheter.

Cocaine self-administration in pigeons

Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 1991
Pigeons with chronic indwelling intravenous catheters responded under a multiple schedule of food and cocaine presentation. In one component, responding was maintained by food presentation under a fixed-ratio (FR 50) schedule, whereas in the other component, responding was maintained under the same schedule by IV infusions of cocaine (0.03 or 0.1 mg/kg/

Pharmacology of drug self-administration

Alcohol, 1990
Limited access to drugs provides a reliable model for their acute-reinforcing effects and a means by which to explore neuropharmacological mechanisms involved in these effects. In limited access situations intravenous self-administration rates of opiates and psychomotor stimulants is inversely related to dose, and competitive antagonists at low doses ...

Nicotine self-administration in rats

Psychopharmacology, 1995
Considering the importance of self-administration models in determining mechanisms of drug maintained behavior, we attempted to replicate the findings of nicotine self-administration by Corrigall and Coen. Male, Sprague-Dawley rats, trained on food reinforcement, acquired relatively high and stable rates of self-administration of IV nicotine bitartrate

Drug self-administration

1993
Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the concept of drug self-administration. The central feature of drug-reinforced behavior is the control of behavior by response-contingent presentation of the drug. In other words, the critical feature of drug-reinforced behavior is that the drug functions as a reinforcer.

Schedule-induced cigarette self-administration

Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 1982
Cigarette self-administration was studied in a controlled laboratory setting by automated recording of the various components of smoking behavior. The effects of intermittent scheduled monetary reinforcement presentation on cigarette smoking was determined in an attempt to demonstrate schedule-induced cigarette self-administration.

Stimulant Self-Administration

2010
Stimulants such as cocaine and the amphetamines are widely abused due to their rewarding effects. Much of what we know about drug abuse and drug reward comes from research involving stimulants, and much of this research involves using drug self-administration as an animal model of drug abuse.

Self-administration of injectable contraceptives

Contraception, 2008
Although depot-medroxyprogesterone represents a highly effective contraceptive, its use is associated with poor continuation rates. Although the major reason for discontinuation is menstrual irregularity, the time, expense and inconvenience of clinic visits also pose a barrier to use.
