Mean Air Concentration of Self-Aerated Flows

The purpose of this technical note is to develop a correlation between the mean air concentration and the most significant flow parameters in the fully aerated zone. Dimensional analysis is used to evaluate the relative importance of the various parameters. This approach follows somewhat that used by Kobus to examine the motion of bubbles in liquids.

Turbulent Open-Channel Flows: Drop-Generation and Self-Aeration

The self-aeration of high-velocity open-channel flows is attributed to the interaction between the turbulent flow and the liquid's free surface. In addition to self-aeration, drops are ejected out of the bulk liquid. It is often proposed that the drops are separated from the bulk by transverse velocity fluctuations.

Self-aerated Flow in Steep, Partially Filled Pipes

The self-aerated flow in steep and partially filled conduits of circular shape is investigated. Prototype measurements are carried out on pipelines with slopes up to 1.0 (45°) and diameters from 110–900 mm. Instruments for measuring the air concentration, the velocity of the mixture and the mixture level are described.

Measurements within self-aerated flow on a large spillway

1978
Instruments were developed and were used to obtain measurements of the most important flow parameters within self-aerated flows on the spillway of Aviemore dam. Compressibility effects within self-aerated flows are examined. It is shown that Mach numbers as large as 2 will occur in localised aerated regions on large structures.
