Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Discrepancy between performance and feedback affects mathematics student teachers’ self-efficacy but not their self-assessment accuracy

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology
Although feedback is of high importance for the professional development of student teachers, the impact of (inadequate) feedback on their self-regulated learning is still unclear.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Developing a conceptual framework for a citizen Science-based agroecology self-assessment tool

open access: yesFrontiers in Agronomy
IntroductionAgroecology offers a promising approach to strengthen, and revolutionise, smallholder food and agricultural systems. Unfortunately, the assessment of agroecology impact at different scales and contexts is hindered by a lack of data and a lack

Structure‐forward targeting of claudins with synthetic binders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Claudins form the paracellular barriers between epithelial and endothelial tissues at tight junctions and are targets for molecular binders with the goal of modulating barrier permeability. Claudin‐binding molecules are relevant in drug delivery or in altering claudin interactions with disease‐causing proteins.

Discerning protein pools by selective staining with self‐labeling tags

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cell surface proteins have an intra‐ and extracellular pool. Combining genetic fusion to self‐labeling tags that can be addressed with small molecule fluorophores allows separating these pools. We highlight recent developments and techniques for state‐of‐the‐art interrogation of cell surface proteins in the complex tissue setting.

Self-Assessment Quiz

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Preventive Cardiology, 2019
ABSTRACT Intra thoracic tumors can lead to a variety of para-neoplastic manifestations which is often overlooked. Awareness about the para-neoplastic manifestations and the possible intra thoracic causes for the same will lead to early diagnosis and appropriate management.
