Cyclic Performance of a Piston Based Self-Centering Bracing System

Structures Congress 2015, 2015
The major difficulties faced with traditional structural bracing systems against seismic loading include compression buckling and permanent residual deformation under seismic loading. Once buckling occurs, the strength and stiffness of a brace gets significantly reduced and the stiffness degrades rapidly in subsequent load cycles.

Mixed Lagrangian formalism for dynamic analysis of self‐centering systems

Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics, 2020
AbstractThis paper presents two models for the analysis of self‐centering concentrically braced frames (SC‐CBFs) with multiple rocking sections. Both models are developed within the mixed Lagrangian formalism (MLF). For these models, MLF leads to a quadratic optimization problem at each time step where the internal forces at the end of the time step ...

Hysteretic behavior studies of self-centering energy dissipation bracing system

Steel and Composite Structures, 2016
This paper presents a new type of pre-pressed spring self-centering energy dissipation (PS-SCED) bracing system that combines friction mechanisms between the inner and outer tube members to provide the energy dissipation with the pre-pressed combination disc springs installed on both ends of the brace to provide the self-centering capability.

Performance-Based Design of Self-Centering Steel Frame Systems

2010
Innovative self-centering (SC) moment resisting frames (SC-MRFs) and concentrically-braced frames (SC-CBFs) are being developed. This paper focuses on SC-MRFS. The beams of an SC-MRF are post-tensioned to the columns using high strength post-tensioning (PT) strands.

Residual drift analyses of realistic self-centering concrete wall systems

Earthquakes and Structures, 2016
To realise the full benefits of a self-centering seismic resilient system, the designer must ensure that the entire structure does indeed re-center following an earthquake. The idealised flag-shaped hysteresis response that is often used to define the cyclic behaviour of self-centering concrete systems seldom exists and the residual drift of a building

Equivalent linear model for fully self‐centering earthquake‐resisting systems

The Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings, 2018
SummaryModern rocking and stepping cores have been known as the efficient self‐centering earthquake‐resisting systems (SC‐ERSs). The current article proposes an approximate equivalent linear (EL) model for rapid estimation of the SC‐ERS displacement.

Ductility Demands on Self-Centering Systems under Earthquake Loading

ACI Structural Journal, 2005
This paper describes the seismic response of self-centering single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems in the form of constant-R ductility spectra. Constant-R ductility spectra for self-centering SDOF systems are computed and compared with those of SDOF systems representing conventional reinforced concrete (RC) systems (represented as bilinear ...

Economic Feasibility Study of Self-Centering Concentrically Braced Frame Systems

Journal of Structural Engineering, 2018
AbstractSelf-centering concentrically braced frame (SC-CBF) systems have been developed to increase the drift capacity of conventional concentrically braced frame (CBF) systems prior to damage to r...
