Self- coherent optical OFDM: An interesting alternative to direct or coherent detection
Recently, coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) has been considered for the next generation 400-Gb/s long haul data transmission. For long haul transmission systems coherent detection is beneficial compared to direct detection as it provides higher sensitivity.

Sensitivity improvement using amplified optical self-coherent detection in an optical OFDM system
2009 IEEE LEOS Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings, 2009We proposed and analyzed an amplified self-coherent detection scheme by extracting and amplifying the optical carrier in an optical OFDM receiver. Simulation results exhibit about 6-dB OSNR sensitivity improvement over traditional direct-detected OFDM receiver.

Virtual Carrier Assisted Self-Coherent Detection Employing DC-Value Method
Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2021, 2021We experimentally demonstrate for the first time the performance of the DC-Value (DC-V) phase recovery method in direct-detection optical links. It offers greater than 13% BER improvement in QPSK transmission compared to state-of-art upsampling-free methods.

Self-coherent optical detection for access and metro networks
2019 21st International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2019The 5G-enabled mobile services along with other broadband services will bring unprecedented bandwidth demand on optical networks. In this context, access and optical metropolitan networks will be at the heart of surging demand for high bandwidth, more flexibility, and reduced cost per unit bandwidth.

Initial results in using a self-coherence method for detecting sustained oscillations
2015 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2015This paper develops a self-coherence method for detecting sustained oscillations using phasor measurement unit (PMU) data. Sustained oscillations decrease system performance and introduce potential reliability issues. Timely detection of the oscillations at an early stage provides the opportunity for taking remedial reaction.
