Coherent, Self-Coherent, and Differential Detection Systems
2011In order to meet the ever-increasing demand in telecommunication capacity, fiberoptic communication systems have been evolving dramatically over the past decade [1, 2]. The fiberoptic communication traffic growth has been at a rate of about 2 dB per year, representing a traffic increase of a factor of 100 in 10 years [1, 2].

Self-Coherent Differential Phase Detection for Optical Physical-Layer Secure Communications
Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2013, 2013We demonstrate a polarization independent receiver suitable for self-coherent M-ary phase-shift keyed signals. The receiver measures a M-PSK signal from a quantum noise randomized encryption system and decrypts it to binary format.

Digital Self-Coherent Detection and Mitigation of Transmission Impairments
Coherent Optical Technologies and Applications, 2008We review the techniques used in digital self-coherent detection for improvement of receiver sensitivity, recovery of multi-level phase and amplitude modulated signals, and mitigation of transmission impairments. Comparisons with digital coherent detection are also discussed.

OFDM and self-coherent detection based satellite-to-ground communication system
2016 15th International Conference on Optical Communications and Networks (ICOCN), 2016In this paper, we propose a scheme using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and self-coherent detection to enhance satellite-to-ground data links, with improved communication data rate and detection performance. We analyzed this free space optical communication systems theoretically, with preliminary experimental results being ...

Linearization of Direct Detection Optical Channels Using Self-Coherent Subsystems
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2016Intensity modulation with direct detection (IM-DD) dominates the commercial short-reach optical communications. However, when upgrading the data-rate distance product to 1000 Gb/s·km per wavelength and beyond, IM-DD faces severe performance barrier. Although a linear mapping exists between the intensity of transmitter and receiver in IM-DD back-to-back

A millimeter-wave (MMW) joint radar-communication (JRC) system with super-resolution is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, using optical heterodyne upconversion and self-coherent detection downconversion techniques. The point lies in the designed coherent dual-band constant envelope linear frequency modulation-orthogonal frequency division ...

Self-Coherent Multisymbol Detection of Optical Differential Phase-Shift Keying
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2008This paper treats the recently emerging self-coherent multisymbol decision-feedback-aided detection techniques for optical differential phase-shift keyed (DPSK) transmission based on both an optical preprocessing approach and an electronic postprocessing approach.

Homodyne versus self-coherent detection in polarization diversity optical transmission systems
2017 IEEE International Conference on Telecommunications and Photonics (ICTP), 2017Analytical results of the performance of homodyne coherent detection (HCD) and self-coherent detection (SCD) schemes in a polarization division multiplexed (PDM)-quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) polarization diversity optical transmission system are discussed focusing to highlight their relative merits.

In this Letter, we present a 200 G C-band self-coherent PON based on dual-polarization (DP) carrier-extracted self-coherent (CESC) detection. Applying a narrowband silicon photonic (SiP) coupled resonator optical waveguide (CROW) filter, a pure carrier can be extracted from the received signal to beat with the DP self-coherent ...
