Dietary Protein Intake and Peritoneal Protein Losses in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients lose protein in their waste dialysate, potentially increasing their risk for malnutrition. We wished to determine whether there was any association between losses and dietary protein intake (DPI). Methods DPI was assessed from 24‐h dietary recall using Nutrics software.

Proposal for an Approach to Artificial Consciousness Based on Self-Consciousness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Current research on artificial consciousness is focused on\ud phenomenal consciousness and on functional consciousness.\ud We propose to shift the focus to self-consciousness in order\ud to open new areas of investigation.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Evolutionary aspects of self- and world consciousness in vertebrates

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2015
Although most aspects of world and self-consciousness are inherently subjective, neuroscience studies in humans and non-human animals provide correlational and causative indices of specific links between brain activity and representation of the self and ...

Adolescent Loneliness, Self-Disclosure, and Private Self-Consciousness: A Longitudinal Investigation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
Examined the causal relations that exist among loneliness, self-disclosure, and private self-consciousness, building on an earlier study by S. L. Franzoi and M. H. Davis (see record 1985-19892-001). Using structural equation techniques and a longitudinal

Examining Movement-Specific Reinvestment and Performance in Demanding Contexts. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Two experiments examined the roles of the dimensions of movement-specific reinvestment (movement self-consciousness and conscious motor processing) on performance under demanding conditions.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Temporal structure of consciousness and minimal self in schizophrenia

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2014
