Stability of Self-Esteem of Filipino Girls

For 193 Filipino girls the test-retest reliability over a 9-mo. period of the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory was .61. Neither level of self-esteem nor field-dependence/independence was related to stability of self-esteem.

There's more to self-esteem than whether it is high or low: The importance of stability of self-esteem.

Study 1 examined the extent to which stability and level of self-esteem predicted cognitive and emotional reactions to interpersonal feedback. Among high self-esteem individuals, instability was associated with acceptance and positive emotions following positive feedback but to rejection and defensiveness following negative feedback.

The authors examined the notion that individuals with unstable high self-esteem possess implicit self-doubt. They adopted the framework of the biopsychosocial model of challenge and threat and assessed spontaneous cardiovascular reactions in the face of success versus failure performance feedback.

Using the large, nationally representative Youth in Transition data, Stability of Self responses were related to the variability in self-esteem responses collected in four consecutive years.

Although self-esteem is shown to be stable in late adolescence, changes, often positive, have also been documented. The present research uses an attitudinal framework and a large longitudinal data set to explore these issues.
