Stability and change in low self-esteem: the role of psychosocial factors
Psychological Medicine, 1995SynopsisLow self-esteem, defined as negative evaluation of self (NES), has been shown to play a significant role in the development of depression at a case level (Brown et al. 1986). This study investigated the stability of this risk factor in 102 women over a 7-year period and examined psychosocial factors that might influence change.

Personality and Individual Differences, 1995Abstract In a recent study, Kernis, Grannemann and Mathis (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 61, 80–84) reported that stability of self-esteem (SE) moderates the relation between level of SE and depression. Specifically, level of SE predicted depression more strongly in persons with temporally stable SE.

The Journal of Early Adolescence, 1997The relation of self-esteem stability to early adolescent adjustment was investigated among 53 eighth- and ninth-grade junior high school students. Youth reported domain specific self-evaluations and global feelings of self-worth on 9 separate days over a 3-week period.
