International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, 1981Abstract The author presents operational definitions of self-hypnosis and examines the differences and similarities between hetero- and self-hypnosis in relation to the methods used and the hypnotizer's attitudes. It is argued that, with the exception of spontaneously occurring trances, there is no “pure” self-hypnosis.
