Optimization by Self-Organized Criticality. [PDF]
AbstractSelf-organized criticality (SOC) is a phenomenon observed in certain complex systems of multiple interacting components, e.g., neural networks, forest fires, and power grids, that produce power-law distributed avalanche sizes. Here, we report the surprising result that the avalanches from an SOC process can be used to solve non-convex ...

Abstract We introduce the emergence of self-organized criticality in statistical systems, leading to critical behavior without a manipulating operator. Such behavior is observed in a variety of phenomena, and criticality was, in particular, studied as origin for earthquake formation.

The self-organized critical multiverse [PDF]
Recently a dynamical selection mechanism for vacua based on search optimization was proposed in the context of false-vacuum eternal inflation on the landscape. The search algorithm, defined by local vacuum transitions, is optimal in regions of the landscape where the dynamics are tuned at criticality, with de Sitter vacua having an average lifetime of ...

Memory in self-organized criticality [PDF]
Many natural phenomena exhibit power law behaviour in the distribution of event size. This scaling is successfully reproduced by Self Organized Criticality (SOC). On the other hand, temporal occurrence in SOC models has a Poisson-like statistics, i.e. exponential behaviour in the inter-event time distribution, in contrast with experimental observations.

Self-organized Higgs criticality [PDF]
Abstract The critical point for a Higgs sector can be a point of interest in the potential for a modulus field such as the radion of an extra dimensional construction, or the dilaton of spontaneously broken approximate conformal invariance.
