Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Meteorite: SEM and structural characterization [PDF]

open access: yes
The use of meteorites in the ceramic industry is interesting, because the present metals can strongly attract magnets. A meteorite is a natural stone or solid object that has passed through the atmosphere from a region of the solar system. The paper presents the results of the examination of the presumed meteorite found in the Valjevo district.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Limitations of Sem Characterization of Semiconductors

open access: yesMicroscopy and Microanalysis, 1997
Abstract The field of semiconductor materials and devices represents a unique challenge to microscopy and microanalysis because the standard of excellence is constantly changing. Driven by the imperative of Moore's law (illustrated in figure 1) - which predicts that the density of devices in a chip doubles every three years - the spatial

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

SEM and EDX characterization of ancient pottery [PDF]

open access: yesLithuanian Journal of Physics, 2006
The potentialities of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) along with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis in assessing the chemical and mineralogical composition of ancient pottery are investigated. The results of SEM and EDX analytical characterization of the Bronze Age pottery from different regions of Lithuania are presented.
