The Principle of Transparency and Semantic Antinomies

Studia Logica, 1963
The task I have set myself in this paper is to investigate semantic antinomies and the names of expressions which occur in them in the light of what is termed the principle of transparency. This principle states that when we use words as signs of any objects, our attention is focussed on those objects, and not on the words we are using.

Semantic Transparency and Translucency in Compound Blissymbols

AAC: Augmentative and Alternative Communication, 1998
Blissymbolics is a graphic symbol system used for communication by individuals whose speech is nonfunctional. The transparency and translucency of Blissymbolics have been viewed in the context of the visual relationship between symbols and their referents.

Compound fracture: The role of semantic transparency and morphological headedness

Brain and Language, 2003
This paper explores the role of semantic transparency in the representation and processing of English compounds. We focus on the question of whether semantic transparency is best viewed as a property of the entire multimorphemic string or as a property of constituent morphemes.

The role of semantic transparency in the processing of English compound words

British Journal of Psychology, 2008
Experiment 1 examined whether the semantic transparency of an English unspaced compound word affected how long it took to process it in reading. Three types of opaque words were each compared with a matched set of transparent words (i.e.

Against the Metaphysical Transparency of Semantic Adicity

2019
Abstract The argument of previous chapters is generalized from referring expressions to argument-taking expressions more generally. The focus is on potential mismatches between what I call the semantic (and syntactic) adicity of argument-taking linguistic expressions and the objective or metaphysical adicity of real-world properties and ...

An architecture for transparent access to semantically heterogeneous information sources

1997
We propose an agent architecture that provides transparent access to a set of distributed, heterogeneous, and autonomous information sources. Our objectives are twofold: First, we want to support quick development of mediators by automatically deriving mediator specifications which are subsequently fed to a mediator generator. Second, we wish to supply

Semantic transparency as a factor in Creole genesis

2002
Abstract In this chapter we propose to discuss the transparency principle as one of the factors that maybe said to play an important role in Creole genesis. We shall deal with the notion of semantic transparency (ST) from two very different theoretical perspectives: that of formal linguistics and that of second language acquisition ...

Morphological processing and the effects of semantic transparency

2020
This dissertation examines the theoretical construct of a ‘morpheme’ as a unit that is independent of semantics and phonology. Specifically, the dissertation examines multi-morphemic words that are semantically opaque, i.e., words whose meaning is not derivable from the meaning of the separate morphemes.
