From Semantics to Computer Science: Generalized finite developments
, 2009The Finite Development theorem (FD) is a fundamental theorem in the theory of the syntax of the lambda-calculus. It gives sense to parallel reductions by stating that one can contract any given set of (possibly nested) redexes in any lambda term without ...

Automated assessment of short free-text responses in computer science using latent semantic analysis
Proceedings of the 16th annual joint conference on Innovation and technology in computer science education, 2011In the last few decades, much research has focused on the evaluation and assessment of students' knowledge. The idea that computers can now be used to aid assessment is appealing. While implementing automatic marking of multiple choice questions is trivial, most educators agree that such form of assessment provides only limited insight into students ...

2019 XLV Latin American Computing Conference (CLEI), 2019
We present a study of research trends for the area of Computer Sciences in Ecuador in recent years. This analysis was performed through a new method that leverages on semantic web technologies and external knowledge bases (i.e. DBpedia and UNESCO nomenclature) for identifying research topics within articles’ metadata.

Computational science: a new frontier for computing
2009Abstract In 2005 Gilles Kahn discussed with Rick Rashid, Stephen Emmott and myself a proposal for Microsoft Research, Cambridge and INRIA to establish a joint research laboratory in France, building on the long-term informal collaboration between the two institutions. The research focus of the joint laboratory was an important point of discussion. In

Semantic Search Using Computer Science Ontology Based on Edge Counting and N-Grams
2014Traditional Information Retrieval systems (keyword-based search) suffer several problems. For instance, synonyms or hyponym are not taken into consideration when retrieving documents that are important for a user’s query. This study adopts an ontology of computer science and proposes an ontology indexing weight based on Wu and Palmer’s edge counting ...

This dissertation argues that automated assessment systems can be useful for both students and educators provided that the results correspond well with human markers. Thus, evaluating such a system is crucial. I present an evaluation framework and show how and why it can be useful for both producers and consumers of automated assessment systems.
