Shaft design: A semi-analytical finite element approach

open access: yesMechanics Based Design of Structures and Machines, 2017
This work deals with the practical use of semi-analytical finite elements in the machine design. The case of mechanical shafts is considered. The most usual loading condition characterized by the presence of axial, torsional, bending, and shear loads can be modeled by over imposing an axi-symmetric, an axi-antisymmetric and a harmonic load ...

A semi-analytical coupled finite element formulation for shells conveying fluids

Computers and Structures, 2002
Abstract A new formulation, based on the semi-analytical finite element method, is proposed for elastic shells conveying fluids. The structural equations are based on the shell element proposed by Ramasamy and Ganesan [Comput Struct 70 (1998) 363] while the fluid model is based on velocity potential.

A semi-analytical finite element for laminated composite plates

open access: yesComposite Structures, 2002
This paper presents a semi-analytical finite element solution for laminated composite plates. The method is based on a mixed variational principle that involves both displacements and stresses. Finite element meshes are only used in the plane of plate, while the through thickness distributions of displacements and stresses are obtained using the method

Semi-analytical solution of path-independent nonlinear finite element models

Finite Elements in Analysis and Design, 2011
Within the semi-analytical solution of the finite element model, the results of the analysis are expressed as a function of one or several parameters of the problem. Severe growth of the size of resulting expressions limits the direct use of symbolic systems to the small number of input parameters left in a symbolic form and to the linear finite ...

A Mindlin plate finite element with semi-analytical shape design sensitivities

Computers and Structures, 2000
Abstract A hybrid-stress Mindlin plate finite element and its sensitivity derivatives are presented. The element is triangular and has a simple nodal configuration with three corner nodes and C o type nodal variables. The use of independent field assumptions for displacements and stresses removes the necessity for an in-plane shear correction ...
