An Automated Method for Pavement Surface Distress Evaluation [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences
Evaluation of surface distress is an important aspect of pavement management. The most common practice to assess surface distress is to develop a pavement condition index (PCI), with ASTM-PCI being the most widely used in evaluating flexible pavements ...

Early life field performance of innovative sustainable semi-flexible pavements

open access: yesInternational Conference on Road and Rail Infrastructure
Semi-flexible pavements in heavy loads areas are recommended to guarantee good performance and safety. They are usually constructed by placing a wearing layer of grouted macadam, a composite material consisting of a porous Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) skeleton grouted with a cementitious matrix.

Conductive Hydrogels for Exogenous Sensing and Cell Fate Control

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We engineer electrically conductive hydrogels by combining sulfated glycosaminoglycans with semiconducting polymers. These hydrogels bind bioactive proteins, including growth factors, whose release or retention can be modulated by low‐voltage stimulation. The hydrogels are also integrated as 3D channels in organic electrochemical transistors as part of

Stiffness and Fatigue of Asphalt Mixtures for Pavement Construction

open access: yesSlovak Journal of Civil Engineering, 2018
The quality of a road is affected by its correct design, the appropriate use of materials, the effects of the climate, and the technological discipline. The deformation properties and fatigue of asphalt layers are important for the design and assessment ...

Performance Evaluation of Open Graded Base Course with Doweled and Non-Doweled Transverse Joints [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The objectives of this study were to investigate the performance of 20-year old doweled/non-doweled and dense-graded/permeable base test sections on three concrete pavement segments in Wisconsin: USH 18/151 in Iowa and Dane counties, STH 29 in Brown ...

Relative pavement performance for dual and wide-based tyre assemblies using a finite element method [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
There is a need to assess the realistic tire contact pressure created by a tire in contact with a pavement. The contact pressure is a function of tire type, axle loading, and tire inflation pressure (TiP).

Two‐Way Shape Memory Polymer Composite Gripper for Adaptive Robotic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A two‐way shape memory polymer (SMP) composite is developed with intrinsic shape‐changing capability driven solely by temperature, eliminating external actuation loads. Embedding the SMP in a low‐stiffness elastomeric matrix enabled reversible transformations during heating and cooling cycles.

Review and evaluation of cold recycling with bitumen emulsion and cement for rehabilitation of old pavements

open access: yesJournal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering (English ed. Online), 2019
The article presents Polish experience with cold recycling of asphalt pavements with the usage of bituminous emulsion and cement. In the 1990s numerous roads in Poland required immediate reinforcement due to their significant degradation.
