On Semi-Markov and Semiregenerative Processes II

open access: yesThe Annals of Probability, 1978
An ergodic theorem is given for the age process $(I(t), Z(t))$ associated with a (possibly transient) semi-Markov chain $(I_n, X_n)^\infty_{n=0}$ whose sojourn times are not exclusively integer valued. Asymptotically the Markov part $(I(t):$ the state occupied at time $t)$ and the renewal part $(Z(t):$ the age in $I(t)$ at time $t)$ split into ...

Building phenotypic character matrices for phylogenetic inference: exploration of 35 years of practice

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Recent methodological development in phylogenetic inference has focused predominantly on molecular data. However, renewed interest in other data types, particularly morphological data, has followed from the increased recognition of the power of total evidence and tip‐dating approaches, including fossil data, for inference of time‐scaled trees ...

Insurance Contracts for Hedging Wind Power Uncertainty

open access: yesMathematics, 2020
This paper presents an insurance contract that the supplier of wind power may subscribe to with an insurance company in order to immunize his/her revenue against the volatility of wind power and prices.

On the importance of including both sexes in animal studies – insights from home‐cage monitoring

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A review of behavioural studies using home‐cage monitoring (HCM) systems revealed that over 61% of studies used only male subjects, with only 24% including both sexes, despite evidence of substantial behavioural differences between male and female animals. This bias could influence the outcomes of biomedical research.

Relaxation patterns and semi-Markov dynamics

open access: yes, 2018
Exponential relaxation to equilibrium is a typical property of physical systems, but inhomogeneities are known to distort the exponential relaxation curve, leading to a wide variety of relaxation patterns.

Invariant Measure and Universality of the 2D Yang–Mills Langevin Dynamic

open access: yesCommunications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We prove that the Yang–Mills (YM) measure for the trivial principal bundle over the two‐dimensional torus, with any connected, compact structure group, is invariant for the associated renormalised Langevin dynamic. Our argument relies on a combination of regularity structures, lattice gauge‐fixing and Bourgain's method for invariant measures ...

Reweighting Scheme for the Calculation of Grand‐Canonical Expectation Values in Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations With a Fermion Sign Problem

open access: yesContributions to Plasma Physics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Ab initio path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations constitute the gold standard for the estimation of a broad range of equilibrium properties of a host of interacting quantum many‐body systems spanning a broad range of conditions from ultracold atoms to warm dense quantum plasmas.

Optimal Intervention in Semi-Markov-Based Asynchronous Probabilistic Boolean Networks

open access: yesComplexity, 2018
Synchronous probabilistic Boolean networks (PBNs) and generalized asynchronous PBNs have received significant attention over the past decade as a tool for modeling complex genetic regulatory networks.

Applications of survival functions to continuous semi-Markov processes for measuring reliability of power transformers

open access: yesJournal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy, 2017
The reliability of power transformers is subject to service age and health condition. This paper proposes a practical model for the evaluation of two reliability indices: survival function (SF) and mean residual life (MRL).
