Comparison of the toxicities of Senecio jacobaea, Senecio vulgaris and Senecio glabellus in rats

The toxicity of Senecio jacobaea, S. vulgaris and S. glabellus to rats was assessed in a feeding trial. The plants were of similar toxicity, with a plant dry matter intake of about 20% of initial body weight being a lethal dose. [Senecio jacobaea: deceiving beauty. Senecio jacobaea poisoning].

In a cattle herd problems were noticed during 1.5 years, characterised by emaciation and loss of milk production with lower fat- and protein%, tenesmus, central nervous symptoms (aggression, circling and blindness), diarrhoea, eczema solare and death. Clinical, laboratory and post mortem examinations did not reveal a specific cause at first.

The paper deals with 18 species and 3 varieties of genus Senecio L., representing tropics and subtropics. It is for the first time that representatives of this genus were divided in groups and subgroups on the basis of their stem growth dimensions and succulence. This subdivision is useful for phytodesign. The plants description was made.
