Control of bacterial metabolism by quorum sensing

Trends in Microbiology, 2015
Bacterial quorum sensing (QS)-dependent gene expression is a dynamic response to cell density. Bacteria produce costly public goods for the benefit of the population as a whole. As an example, QS rewires cellular metabolism to produce oxalate (a public good) to enable survival during the stationary phase in Burkholderia glumae, Burkholderia ...

Making sense of gene expression control by flux sensing

Nature Metabolism
Metabolic networks.Cells regulate metabolic fluxes by changing enzyme levels according to their needs, but how do they regulate something that cannot be measured directly? In this issue of Nature Metabolism, Palme et al. address the fundamental question of how metabolic flux sensing is coupled to gene expression.

Sense of Control and Voting: A Genetically‐Driven Relationship

Social Science Quarterly, 2011
ObjectivesThe impact of political efficacy on political participation has been established in numerous classical studies of political behavior. However, the effects of more general measures of efficacy on political efficacy and voter turnout have received almost no attention. Additionally, seemingly independent contemporary developments in the field of

Sense of Control: Potentials for Intervention

The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, 1989
A substantial amount of research has demonstrated that the sense of control is associated with numerous positive outcomes, including good health. Many aspects of the personal and social conditions of old age influence the control-health relationship.

Sensing properties of optically controlled metamaterials

Sixth International Conference on Optical and Photonic Engineering (icOPEN 2018), 2018
The directions of refracted and reflected beams in gradient metasurfaces are governed by the generalized Snell’s law. The metasurface response can also be controlled dynamically by a standing wave formed by two coherent counterpropagating beams. In this work, we study sensing properties of two types of optically controlled metasurfaces.
