Sensor networks are gaining considerable attention nowadays. Pre and post processing of the measured data in such networks is crucial to the conservation of power and communication resources. We address the optimization of these processing requirements in addition to the tradeoff between network parameters.

In the previous chapters, we have discussed issues concerning hardware, communication and network topologies for the practical deployment of Body Sensor Networks (BSNs). The pursuit of low power miniaturised distributed sensing under a patient’s natural physiological conditions has also imposed significant technical challenges on integrating ...

The nondestructive evaluation of food produce requires various sensors, which are more than a simple accumulation of independent sensors. Sensor fusion provides a collaborative approach with those sensors, in order to improve the quality assessment of the product and assure the consumer a high-quality produce.

This paper reviews some knowledge representation approaches devoted to the sensor fusion problem, as encountered whenever images, signals, text must be combined to provide the input to a controller or to an inference procedure. The basic steps involved in the derivation of the knowledge representation scheme, are: (A) locate a representation ...

In the previous chapters, we have dealt exclusively with the part of attention that is concerned with visual processing. This part is the best investigated one in human behavior, probably because vision is the sense using the most capacity in the human brain: the 32 representations of the retina occupy more than half of the whole cortex [Kandel et al.,
