Motion After‐Effects Induced by Dynamic Illumination in Crab Vision

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Motion detection is an elementary aspect of most animal visual systems. However, many environments are prone to background motion, which might disrupt the ability of visual systems to detect relevant motion cues.

Consensus Formation and Change are Enhanced by Neutrality

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Neutral agents are shown to enhance both the formation and overturning of consensus in collective decision‐making. A general mathematical model and experiments with locusts and humans reveal that neutrality enables robust consensus via simple interactions and accelerates consensus change by reducing effective population size.

Good vibrations: remote‐tactile foraging success of wading birds is positively affected by the water content of substrates they forage in

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology
Some taxa of wading birds can locate buried prey by detecting vibratory cues in their foraging substrates while probe‐foraging, using a sensory modality called ‘remote‐touch'. As more saturated substrates transmit vibrations better, we predict that these

Rapid adaptive evolution of colour vision in the threespine stickleback radiation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Vision is a sensory modality of fundamental importance for many animals, aiding in foraging, detection of predators and mate choice. Adaptation to local ambient light conditions is thought to be commonplace, and a match between spectral sensitivity and ...

Moth-inspired navigation algorithm in a turbulent odor plume from a pulsating source

open access: yes, 2018
Some female moths attract male moths by emitting series of pulses of pheromone filaments propagating downwind. The turbulent nature of the wind creates a complex flow environment, and causes the filaments to propagate in the form of patches with varying ...

Climate Change Threatens Micronutrient Density of European Winter Wheat

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Micronutrients are vital for human health. Wheat is a major staple crop and a significant source of minerals and B‐vitamins. The impact of climate change on their content remains largely unknown. We evaluated micronutrient levels in European winter wheat grown under historical and projected climate conditions. Our findings indicate that future climates

Paving the Way to Elucidate Hg's Role in Tumorigenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tumorigenesis can result from diverse environmental carcinogens. Among them, mercury—a lifelong bioaccumulative Group 2B carcinogen—has tumorigenic potential that remains poorly understood due to confounding co‐exposures and limited organ‐specific data.

Exploring the evolution of a trade-off between vigilance and foraging in group-living organisms

open access: yes, 2014
Despite the fact that grouping behavior has been actively studied for over a century, the relative importance of the numerous proposed fitness benefits of grouping remain unclear.

An Increasing Misalignment Between Crop Distribution and Environmental Resources Under Climate Change in China

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Climate change reshapes the spatial alignment between crop production and environmental resources. Using multi‐source data and a crop model, integrated climatic, water, and soil endowments for maize and wheat are quantified and compared with harvest distributions.
