Control of Equilibrium Separatrix Shape on Field-Reversed-Configuration Plasmas

Fusion Technology, 1995
Equilibrium shape of a field-reversed-configuration plasma is controlled to maximize its poloidal flux. Plasma elongation is changed from 7.5 to 4.5 by adding a local field to the plasma due to the introduction of a control coil. The plasma shape modifies while keeping its volume and the product of its poloidal flux and elongation constant.

Electrostatic quasi-neutral formulation of global cross-separatrix particle simulation in field-reversed configuration geometry

Physics of Plasmas, 2020
A quasi-neutral blended drift-Lorentz particle model of the field-reversed configuration (FRC) has been developed and implemented in the particle-in-cell code named ANC. A field-aligned mesh and corresponding mesh operations are constructed for solving self-consistent electric fields in FRC geometry.

Mirror Effect on Radius of Separatrix in Field Reversed Configuration

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1984
The separatrix radius can be increased by application of external mirror field. This is concluded by a thought experiment and confirmed numerically. The radius depends not only on the average beta ratio but also on configuration of the applied external field and the separatrix length.

Separatrix shapes and internal structures of a field-reversed configuration plasma

Physics of Plasmas, 2003
The separatrix shape of a field-reversed configuration plasma is determined in comparison with measured fluxes surrounding the plasma and the solution of the Grad–Shafranov equation with an edge-layer plasma in the open field region. A reconnection point of the bias field, an outgoing flow of torn plasmas and a large amplitude ripple on the separatrix ...

Modeling feedback control of unstable separatrix location in beam-driven field-reversed configurations

Physics of Plasmas, 2017
We present a linear, one-parameter model for rigid displacement of a toroidally symmetric plasma. When the feedback control is feasible, plasma inertia can be neglected, and the instability growth rate is proportional to wall resistivity. We benchmark the linear model against non-linear, hybrid simulations of an axially unstable, beam-driven field ...

Tilt stabilization by cycling ions crossing magnetic separatrix in a field-reversed configuration

Physics of Plasmas, 1997
The stabilization of the tilt disruption in a field-reversed configuration is investigated by means of a three-dimensional particle simulation. The growth rate of tilting instability decreases as the plasma beta value at magnetic separatrix βsp increases, while it is slightly affected by the finite ion Larmor radius parameter s̄ and the hollowness ...

Estimation method of a separatrix profile of field-reduced configuration plasma with the deconvolution concept

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1999
A method to analyze the separatrix profile of a field-reversed configuration is presented that is based on a multichannel excluded flux measurement. In the method, the plasma current is represented by current filaments. This current code includes all the magnetic sources (e.g., a vacuum conducting vessel, coils for the confinement field, search coils ...

Axial length and separatrix radius behavior of field-reversed configuration plasma in dynamic compression of mirror distance

Physics of Plasmas, 2000
The axial magnetic compression experiment of the field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasma is reported. The FRC produced in the theta-pinch system is translated into the confinement region. The separatrix length of the translated FRC is decided by the mirror distance. The compression is done in a manner as shortening the distance in time.

Particle Orbit Simulations on Ion Loss at the Edge of a Tokamak with Separatrix Configuration

Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 1995
Particle orbit simulations are carried out to study the ion orbits and loss at the edge of a tokamak plasma with double null magnetic separatrix. The ion loss conditions are examined as a function ofv∥/v0and the distance of ion launching points from the magnetic separatrix in cases both without and with radial electric field. The simulation results are
