Nonclonal Burkholderia pseudomallei Population in Melioidosis Case Cluster, Sri Lanka

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2021
A melioidosis case cluster of 10 blood culture–positive patients occurred in eastern Sri Lanka after an extreme weather event. Four infections were caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei isolates of sequence type 594.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Genomic characterisation of generic Escherichia coli from food-producing animals and products of animal origin in South Africa

open access: yesFrontiers in Bacteriology
Escherichia coli is found in diverse environmental niches, including meat and meat products, and is known for its significance in both food safety and public health. In South Africa, whole genomic sequencing (WGS) efforts for E.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Induction of cytolytic T lymphocytes directed towards the V3 loop of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 external glycoprotein gp120 by p55gag/V3 chimeric vaccinia viruses

open access: yes, 1993
T cell-mediated cytotoxicity may play an important role in controlling infection by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In order to study the ability of rationally designed antigens to induce cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTLs) we replaced stretches of 30 to ...

Multilocus sequence typing as a replacement for serotyping in Salmonella enterica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica is traditionally subdivided into serovars by serological and nutritional characteristics. We used Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) to assign 4,257 isolates from 554 serovars to 1092 sequence types (STs).

High prevalence of blaCTX-M-55-carrying Escherichia coli in both ceftiofur-use and non-use pig farms

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology
The emergence of third-generation cephalosporin-resistant bacteria poses a significant human health hazard worldwide. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)/AmpC β-lactamase-producing third-generation cephalosporin-

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli Multilocus Sequence Types in Guatemala and Mexico

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2010
The genetic backgrounds of 24 enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains from Mexico and Guatemala expressing heat-stable toxin (ST) and coli surface antigen 6 (CS6) were analyzed.
