Analysis of Treacher Collins syndrome 4‐associated mutations in Schizosaccharomyces pombe

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Fission yeast models carrying Treacher Collins syndrome type 4‐associated mutations reveal that impaired processivity of RNA polymerase I leads to defective rRNA transcription. This study highlights the essential role of a conserved arginine residue in Pol I elongation and provides mechanistic insight into the pathogenesis of ribosomopathies.

Hands‐on protocol for preparing water‐soluble fractions from agri‐food samples for NMR‐based metabolomics analysis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This research protocol outlines a workflow for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)‐based metabolomics in the agri‐food sector. Using two case studies—strawberry leaves (solid matrix) and wine (liquid matrix)—it details the procedures for sample preparation, data acquisition, and processing.

Establishment of a coculture system for Porphyromonas gingivalis and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using spheroid culture and LATS inhibition

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We established a spheroid coculture system enabling viable Porphyromonas gingivalis–HNSCC interactions under normoxic conditions. Inhibition of LATS1/2 maintains tumor cells in an undifferentiated state, which may promote spheroid growth and create a more permissive environment for bacterial persistence.

Pitfalls of sequential extractions

Water Research, 1990
Abstract An increasing number of researchers are using sequential extractions to determine the speciation of trace elements in sediments. Unfortunately, sequential extraction methods have not been successfully validated. The results are simply taken as providing “operational definitions” of the phases one is trying to measure.

Minerva: Sequential Covering for Rule Extraction

IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part B (Cybernetics), 2008
Various benchmarking studies have shown that artificial neural networks and support vector machines often have superior performance when compared to more traditional machine learning techniques. The main resistance against these newer techniques is based on their lack of interpretability: it is difficult for the human analyst to understand the ...

Improved sequential endmember extraction algorithms

2011 3rd Workshop on Hyperspectral Image and Signal Processing: Evolution in Remote Sensing (WHISPERS), 2011
Most of sequential endmember extraction algorithms, such as iterative error analysis (IEA), vertex component analysis (VCA), and simplex growing algorithm (SGA), use sequential forward selection (SFS) searching strategy. The advantage is its low computational complexity. However, it is sensitive to the initial condition. To reduce the “nesting effect”,
