Single-molecule and single-nanoparticle SERS: from fundamental mechanisms to biomedical applications

Chemical Society Reviews, 2008
This tutorial review discusses a new class of colloidal metal nanoparticles that is able to enhance the efficiencies of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) by as much as 10(14)-10(15) fold. This enormous enhancement allows spectroscopic detection and identification of single molecules located on the nanoparticle surface or at the junction of two ...

A review of cellulose-based substrates for SERS: fundamentals, design principles, applications

Cellulose, 2019
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) provides a useful sensory platform whereby target molecules at low concentration are identified, potentially detecting a single molecule. As a result, SERS has been widely applied in a variety of research endeavors using different substrates, one of which is a cellulose-based substrate.

Fundamental studies on enhancement and blinking mechanism of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and basic applications of SERS biological sensing

Frontiers of Physics, 2013
We review recent our results in the fundamental study of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with emphasis on experiments that attempted to identify the enhancement and blinking mechanism using single Ag nanoparticle dimers attached to dye molecules. These results are quantitatively discussed in the framework of electromagnetic mechanism.
