More Science Than Art: The First Botanical Garden in Portugal (c. 1650)

open access: yesRenaissance Studies, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gabriel Grisley, a German physician, came to Portugal and founded a garden near the Xabregas River in Lisbon, during the 1610s under the Spanish kings' rule. In view of the utility a botanic garden represented for the kingdom, he was able to obtain a royal privilege from King João IV during the Restauration War against the Spanish (1640–1668).

Disaster Schooling Experiences and Emergent Crises: Lessons From Puerto Rico

open access: yesAnthropology &Education Quarterly, Volume 57, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper examines the disaster schooling experiences of Puerto Rican educators, families, and students across multiple crises following Hurricane Maria. Drawing on 11 months of ethnographic research, we analyze how schooling unfolded across disasters and how long‐standing vulnerabilities and structural inequalities shaped responses. Findings

Basic income trials and the politics of scale: A research agenda

open access: yesPolicy Studies Journal, Volume 54, Issue 3, August 2026.
Abstract The growing popularity of basic income has led to extensive trials of the policy in numerous settings across the world. However, analysis of the politics of basic income, and in particular the political dynamics preceding and resulting from trial programs, lags. In response, we propose a research agenda that uses political scale to investigate

Detecting extirpation: A localized approach to a global problem

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 4, Page 1160-1174, July 2026.
The global biodiversity crisis stems from a cascading series of extirpations driving species toward extinction. Addressing this crisis requires methods for early detection of extinction at local scales, where communities can mobilize conservation efforts.

Series like Taylor's series

open access: yesAequationes Mathematicae, 1983
Let \(L^ 2\) denote the Banach algebra of Lebesgue-integrable functions \(f: [0,\omega)\to {\mathbb{C}}\) with convolution product ''*'', \(\Omega\) a nonfinite compact subset of the right half-plane Re s\(>0\) and the space of generalized functions \(X_{\Omega}\) the completion of \(L^ 1\) with respect to the norm \[ | x|_{\Omega}=\max_{s\in \Omega}| \

Lateromedial and oblique radiographs detect most fetlock pathologies as effectively as a full series in horses

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, Volume 58, Issue 4, Page 934-945, July 2026.
Abstract Background Radiographic protocols for the metacarpo‐/tarsophalangeal joint during pre‐purchase examinations (PPE) vary internationally, but their impact on pathology detection remains unclear. Optimising imaging protocols is essential to balance diagnostic accuracy with workflow efficiency and radiation exposure.

Combined Effects of Water Shortage and CO2 Enrichment on Yield and Water Use Properties of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Genotypes

open access: yesJournal of Agronomy and Crop Science, Volume 212, Issue 4, July 2026.
ABSTRACT A selection of winter barley genotypes was investigated for their responses to water shortage under different CO2 concentrations in a greenhouse. The experiment was conducted in a 2*2 factorial design. Plants were grown either with optimum water supply or simulated drought in the BBCH 59 stage at current (~400 ppm CO2) or elevated CO2 ...

Der Oxidationszustand bestimmt die Lösungsmittelstruktur um einen Mangan‐Vanadium Polyoxometallat‐Wasseroxidationskatalysator

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 24, 8 June 2026.
