Volunteering: A Serious Leisure Perspective
Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, 1996A handful of observers have suggested that volunteering can be defined and described as a leisure activity. Extending this reasoning, it is argued that many kinds of volunteering, because they foster the acquisition and expression of a combination of special skills, knowledge, and experience, can be looked on as serious leisure.
