Description and Nomenclature of Neisseria meningitidis Capsule Locus

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2013
Pathogenic Neisseria meningitidis isolates contain a polysaccharide capsule that is the main virulence determinant for this bacterium. Thirteen capsular polysaccharides have been described, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has enabled ...

Recent changes in the epidemiology of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W across the world, current vaccination policy choices and possible future strategies

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, 2018
Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is a serious disease that is fatal in 5–15% and disabling in 12–20% of cases. The dynamic and unpredictable epidemiology is a particular challenge of IMD prevention.

Proteins of Palyam serogroup viruses

open access: yesJournal of General Virology, 1990
The replication and polypeptide synthesis of Abadina virus, a member of the Palyam serogroup of orbiviruses, was studied. The first virus-specified proteins could be demonstrated 2 to 4 h post-infection (p.i.) by immunoprecipitation. The rate of synthesis increased rapidly until 12 h p.i. after which it remained fairly constant until 18 h p.i.

Serogrouping Neisseria gonorrhoeae: correlation of coagglutination serogroup WII with homosexually acquired infection. [PDF]

open access: yesSexually Transmitted Infections, 1984
With coagglutination reagents prepared against W antigens, 205 clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae were classified into three serogroups WI, WII, and WIII. Of 195 strains isolated from patients who acquired their infection in the Edinburgh area, 85 (44%) belonged to serogroup WI and 110 (56%) to serogroup WII.

Whole genome sequencing of Streptococcus pneumoniae: development, evaluation and verification of targets for serogroup and serotype prediction using an automated pipeline

open access: yesPeerJ, 2016
Streptococcus pneumoniae typically express one of 92 serologically distinct capsule polysaccharide (cps) types (serotypes). Some of these serotypes are closely related to each other; using the commercially available typing antisera, these are assigned to

A universal vaccine for serogroup B meningococcus. [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2006
Meningitis and sepsis caused by serogroup B meningococcus are two severe diseases that still cause significant mortality. To date there is no universal vaccine that prevents these diseases. In this work, five antigens discovered by reverse vaccinology were expressed in a form suitable for large-scale manufacturing and formulated with adjuvants suitable

Meningococcal disease serogroup C

open access: yesRisk Management and Healthcare Policy, 2012
Despite current advances in antibiotic therapy and vaccines, meningococcal disease serogroup C (MDC) remains a serious threat to global health, particularly in countries in North and Latin America, Europe, and Asia. MDC is a leading cause of morbidity, mortality, and neurological sequelae and it is a heavy economic burden.
