Piranhas (Serrasalmus spp.) as markers of mercury bioaccumulation in Amazonian ecosystems
Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2004 Mercury (Hg) concentration in fish depends on feeding strategies and age/size within the species as well as on water parameters related to acidity and Hg speciation. We chose two species of piranhas (Serrasalmus aff. eigenmanni and Serrasalmus rhombeus) to test their suitability as markers of Hg bioaccumulation.

Papers in Palaeontology, Volume 12, Issue 4, July/August 2026.Abstract Freshwater fishes from the northwestern Colombian Andes are reported from the Pliocene Sincelejo and Ware formations. A total of 10 taxa have been identified, involving two orders, five families and nine genera. Characters from dental morphology, fin spines and cranial bones are provided as taxonomic tools for the study of fossil fishes.
