Serum iron levels are an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality of critically ill patients: a retrospective, single-institution study

open access: yesJournal of International Medical Research, 2019
Objective This study aimed to examine the relationship between serum iron levels and in-hospital mortality in critically ill patients. Methods We retrospectively studied 250 critically ill patients who received treatment at the intensive care unit ...

Serum iron concentration and total iron binding capacity in patients of oral squamous cell carcinoma

open access: yesBangladesh Journal of Pharmacology, 2007
The serum iron concentration and Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) status of 24 patients of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) were compared with the findings of 13 healthy subjects. OSCC was found to have association with low serum iron level.

Chronic hyperplastic anemia as an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic lesions: a lesson from thalassemia intermedia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Introduction. Cardiovascular involvement represents a well-known complication and the primary cause of mortality, both in transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia major (β-TM) and in transfusion-independent beta thalassemia intermedia (β-TI ...

Fully Bio‐Based Gelatin Organohydrogels via Enzymatic Crosslinking for Sustainable Soft Strain and Temperature Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Enzymatically crosslinked gelatin‐based organohydrogels, fabricated through a fully bio‐based and scalable process, exhibit exceptional strain and temperature sensing capabilities with minimal interference from environmental humidity. These transparent, stretchable, and ionically conductive materials operate without synthetic fillers or dopants.

Comparison of serum levels of hepcidin and pro-hepcidin in hemodialysis patients and healthy subjects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Hepcidin prevents absorption of iron from the intestine and inhibits release of iron from macrophages and hepatocytes. For this reason, it seems that high levels of hepcidin are a predisposing factor for anemia in chronic inflammatory conditions such as ...

Serum ferritin thresholds for the diagnosis of iron deficiency in pregnancy: a systematic review

open access: yesTransfusion Medicine, 2017
The aim of this review was to understand the landscape of serum ferritin in diagnosing iron deficiency in the aetiology of anaemia in pregnancy. Iron deficiency in pregnancy is a major public health problem leading to the development of anaemia. Reducing

MPI‐Guided Photothermal Therapy of Prostate Cancer Using Stem Cell Delivery of Magnetotheranostic Nanoflowers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Tumor‐tropic human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were used as delivery vehicles for magnetotheranostic gold–iron oxide nanoflowers. Magnetic particle imaging of the iron component demonstrated widespread intratumoral distribution and sustained retention in contrast to injection of naked nanoflowers.

Serum Hepcidin Levels, Iron Dyshomeostasis and Cognitive Loss in Alzheimer’s Disease

open access: yesAging and Disease, 2017
This pilot study examined the status of the master iron regulatory peptide, hepcidin, and peripheral related iron parameters in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment patients, and evaluated the relationship between iron dyshomeostasis ...
