Metallofullerenol Sc3N@C80(OH)18: A New Generation Radioprotector Protecting Human Erythrocytes Against Multiple Biochemical Damage Modes Upon Gamma Irradiation, Identifying It as a Scavenger of Short‐ and Long‐Lived Radicals

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Metallofullerenol Sc3N@C80(OH)18 demonstrates strong radioprotective properties as a scavenger of both short‐ and long‐lived radicals. The study reveals protection of human erythrocytes from γ‐radiation–induced biochemical damage via post‐irradiation removal of primary and secondary reactive oxidants, supported by pulse radiolysis kinetics.

Comparative efficacy of deferiprone, deferoxamine and combination of deferiprone and deferoxamine on serum ferritin value in Beta-Thalassemia patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background: Iron overload is a predictable and life-threatening complication in patients with thalassemia. Effective and convenient iron chelation remains one of the main targets of clinical management of thalassemia major.

Magnetic Bioprinting and Actuation of Stretchable Muscle Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Human and murine myoblasts labeled with iron oxide nanoparticles are magnetically bioprinted into wrench‐shaped tissues, which are then anchored between two magnetic needles. Mechanical stretching of these tissues enhances both their maturation and functional performance. Abstract Engineering tissues with precise, long‐lasting shapes and the capability

Compression‐Tension‐Asymmetry and Stiffness Nonlinearity of Collagen‐Matrigel Composite Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Self‐assembled collagen hydrogel matrices are widely used in tissue engineering applications. These matrices stiffen and contract laterally under tension due to fiber alignment and soften and collapse under compression due to fiber buckling. It is demonstrated that filler materials, such as Matrigel, linearize the mechanical behavior of collagen ...

Correlation of serum leptin with levels of hemoglobin in hemodialysis. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
To examine the association of serum leptin level with anemia in hemodialysis, we investigated 36 patients (males: 21, diabetics: 11) under regular hemodialysis. For patients, complete blood counts, iron profile, serum leptin, and adequacy of hemodialysis

Quantitating Iron in Serum Ferritin by Use of ICP-MS [PDF]

open access: yes
A laboratory method has been devised to enable measurement of the concentration of iron bound in ferritin from small samples of blood (serum). Derived partly from a prior method that depends on large samples of blood, this method involves the use of an ...

The Distribution of Complement Proteins in Soft and Hard Coronas Impacts Macrophage Uptake of Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Protein corona plays a critical role in the biological behavior of nanoparticles. This study investigates the distribution of complement proteins in soft corona and their impact on the macrophage uptake of polymer nanoparticles. It underlines the significance of soft corona investigation for understanding in vivo performance of nanomedicines.
