In a degree where technical skills are mainly emphasized, it is often difficult to have students realize that they also need some soft skills to successfully create useful software. Often students leave an HCI course with some ideas of what HCI is about, without really appreciating its impact, or its usefulness.

In this essay, I focus on the service in service learning. I consider what might happen if the term "service learning" was inverted--to learning service. I wonder if such an inversion can help instructors, students, and community partners critically evaluate the service they do. I describe "reading service as text" as a tool for learning service.

Although service-learning programs can have diverse theoretical roots, faculty who engage their students in service-learning may not be be cognizant of alternatives to the one they adopt.
