Mulching Increases Water Use Efficiency, Production and Profitability in Forage Cactus–Maize Intercropping Systems

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the growth, forage production, soil water balance, water indices, biological efficiency and competitive capacity of forage cactus and maize in monoculture and intercropping, with or without mulch. The experiment was conducted in Serra Talhada, Pernambuco, Brazil, using the cactus clone ‘Orelha de Elefante Mexicana’ (OEM ...

UTILIZACIÓN DE RESIDUOS AGRÍCOLAS Y AGROINDUSTRIALES EN EL CULTIVO Y PRODUCCIÓN DEL HONGO COMESTIBLE SETA (Pleurotus spp.)

open access: yes, 2016
Algunos procesos productivos permiten el aprovechamiento de subproductos, desechos o residuos generados en otros procesos distintos. Lo anterior es interesante desde el punto de vista del desarrollo sustentable debido a que, por un lado, se tiende a ...

Strongwellsea caulis, Strongwellsea lata, and Strongwellsea potentia (Entomophthorales: Entomophthoraceae), three new species infecting adult flies (Diptera: Anthomyiidae)

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
The insect‐pathogenic fungal genus Strongwellsea (Entomophthorales) contains specialist species infecting only adult cyclorrhaphan flies with an infection that will usually develop one, two or even three abdominal holes through which conidia are discharged while the fly is still alive.

Game over: Conflict resolution through strategic growth in an invertebrate

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract In some multimember groups with unequal partitioning of reproduction and poor breeding opportunities outside the group, natural selection has favoured the evolution of adaptive mechanisms such as strategic growth modulation.

Cretaceous lacewing larvae with binocular vision demonstrate the convergent evolution of sophisticated simple eyes

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
We report three ca. 100 million‐year‐old lacewing larvae with extraordinarily large stemmata. One of them additionally has a very wide head, which represents a previously unknown morphology. The arrangement of the stemmata indicates stereoscopic vision in these predatory larvae.

Not-so-simple setae [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Biology, 2011
I write to express my serious reservations concerning some of the scientific conclusions and statements of attribution made in a recently published account by Monteclaro et al. in The Journal of Experimental Biology , entitled ‘Response properties of crayfish antennules to hydrodynamic stimuli:

Genetic differentiation and adaptive evolution of buff‐tailed bumblebees in Asia

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
This study investigates the genetic differentiation and local adaptation of the buff‐tailed bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) across its European and Asian populations. Using whole‐genome resequencing, we identified distinct genetic differences between populations, with Asian B. terrestris representing a unique genetic resource.

Chronic Administration of Nicotine-Free Cigarette Smoke Extract Impaired Endothelium-Dependent Vascular Relaxation in Rats via Increased Vascular Oxidative Stress

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2012
Cigarette smoking has been implicated in the initiation and progression of cardiovascular disorders and atherosclerosis. Here, we examined the effects of nicotine-free cigarette smoke extract (CSE) on the regulation of cardiovascular function.

The predatory behavior of ants: an impressive panoply of morphological adaptations

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
This review focuses on predation in ants, showing the wide diversity of cases from solitary foraging to group hunting tactics, as well as the evolution of mandible shape frequently adapted to capture specific prey. Although most ants are generalist feeders, finding their sugary substances directly on plants or indirectly via sap‐sucking insects, some ...
