A straight-forward seed production technology system for foxtail millet (Setaria italica).

Journal of Integrative Plant Biology, 2023
For autogamous crops, a precondition for using heterosis is to produce sufficient pure male-sterile female parents that can be used to produce hybrid seeds.

The resistance of plants Setaria veridis (L.) Beauv. to the influence of cadmium

Biology Bulletin, 2014
It was shown that cadmium causes a slowdown of green foxtail Setaria veridis (L.) Beauv. shoots; however it had no effect on root growth or accumulation of underground and above-ground biomass. In the analysis of the effect of cadmium on the water regime and photosynthesis of plants, it was found that it had a negative effect on the stomatal-apparatus,

Evaluation of the molecular and physiological response to dehydration of two accessions of the model plant Setaria viridis

Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, 2021
Water deficits are responsible for countless agricultural losses. Among the affected crops, C4 plants are of special interest due to their high water and nitrogen use efficiency. Two accessions of Setaria viridis (Ast-1 and A10.1) with contrasting responses to water deficit were used in the current work to better understand the mechanisms behind ...

Inheritance of Height of Plants in the Italian Millet--Setaria Italica(Beauv)

MADRAS AGRICULTURAL JOURNAL, 1937
Varieties of Italian millet vary very much in their height. An experience in the inheritance of plant height in this millet is recorded here.In 1933 a cross was made between two pure lines.S.I.1646and S.I.2485(vide illustration.)Both of these had a duration of 85 to 90 days.A first generation of 15 plants was raised. These were widely spaced with a view ...

Setaria viridis as a Model Plant for Functional Genomic Studies in C4 Crops

2018
Setaria viridis is an emerging model for C4 species, and it is an important model to validate some genes for further C4 crop transformation, such as sugarcane, maize, and wheat. Here, we describe two protocols for stable transformation of S. viridis mediated by Agrobacterium tumefaciens with three different reporter genes and two selectable markers ...

Systems analysis of long-term heat stress responses in the C4 grass Setaria viridis

The Plant Cell
Many C4 plants are used as food and fodder crops and often display improved resource use efficiency compared to C3 plants. However, the response of C4 plants to future extreme conditions such as heatwaves is less understood.

Effects of Setaria viridis on heavy metal enrichment tolerance and bacterial community establishment in high-sulfur coal gangue.

Chemosphere
Plant enrichment and tolerance to heavy metals are crucial for the phytoremediation of coal gangue mountain. However, understanding of how plants mobilize and tolerate heavy metals in coal gangue is limited.

Reference Genome Sequence Of The Model Plant Setaria

We generated a high-quality reference genome sequence for foxtail millet (Setaria italica). The ~400-Mb assembly covers ~80% of the genome and >95% of the gene space. The assembly was anchored to a 992-locus genetic map and was annotated by comparison with >1.3 million expressed sequence tag reads.

Natural plant enzyme inhibitors. Studies on a proteinase inhibitor from Italian millet (Setaria italica)

Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, 1984
AbstractA proteinase inhibitor specific for trypsin was purified from Italian millet (Setaria italica) 170‐fold by extraction with 0.02M HC1, ammonium sulphate fractionation, chromatography on CM‐cellulose and trypsin‐affigel chromatography. The inhibitor with an Mr of 14000 was found to be homogeneous by gel chromatography on Sephadex G‐100 and sodium

Role of organic amendments in improving the morphophysiology and soil quality of Setaria italica under salinity

Heliyon
Salinity negatively impacts soil fertility by impairing the development and physiological functions of foxtail millet plants. Organic amendments have emerged as a viable solution in the reclamation and management of salinity inflicted soils and improve ...
