The sex-determining region of the human Y chromosome encodes a finger protein

open access: closedCell, 1987
The presence or absence of the Y chromosome determines whether a mammalian embryo develops as a male or female. In humans, genetic deletion analysis of "sex-reversed" individuals has identified a small portion of the Y chromosome necessary and sufficient to induce testicular differentiation of the bipotential gonad.

The sex-determining region of the mouse Y chromosome encodes a protein with a highly acidic domain and 13 zinc fingers

open access: closedCell, 1989
The ZFY gene, located in the sex-determining region of the human Y chromosome, appears to encode a zinc-finger protein. Two homologous genes, Zfy-1 and Zfy-2, are found in the sex-determining region of the mouse Y chromosome. One or both genes may serve as the primary sex-determining signal in mice.
