SEX-DETector: A Probabilistic Approach to Study Sex Chromosomes in Non-Model Organisms

open access: yesGenome Biology and Evolution, 2016
We propose a probabilistic framework to infer autosomal and sex-linked genes from RNA-seq data of a cross for any sex chromosome type (XY, ZW, and UV).

Oral Exposure to Food‐Grade Nanoparticles Poses a Risk of Alzheimer's Disease‐Like Symptoms by Triggering Autophagy Defects in Neurons

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Three food‐grade nanomaterials induce dysregulated RyR‐Ca2+ signaling through epigenetic modifications. This dysregulation impairs the autophagic clearance process, ultimately leading to abnormal Aβ deposition and increase phosphorylated tau levels.

Chromosomal studies of two spider species of Pholcidae (Araneae: Haplogynae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Pholcidae (Haplogynae) is the most diverse family which comprises 1,241 taxonomically defined species, of which only 19 have been cytogenetically analyzed. The two pholcids species, Crossopriza lyoni (Blackwall 1867) and Artema atlanta (Walckenaer 1837)

Allele‐Specific Regulation of PAXIP1‐AS1 by SMC3/CEBPB at rs112651172 in Psychiatric Disorders Drives Synaptic and Behavioral Dysfunctions in Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identifies a functional noncoding variant, rs112651172 (C/G), that drives allele‐specific expression of PAXIP1‐AS1 in monozygotic twin pairs discordant for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The risk G allele enhances CEBPB binding, leading to lncRNA upregulation, CNTNAP3 derepression, and synaptic and behavioral deficits in mice.

Interspecific chromosomal divergences in the genus Characidium (Teleostei: Characiformes: Crenuchidae)

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology
Karyotypes of seven fish species of the genus Characidium, three of them studied for the first time, were characterized using conventional cytogenetic techniques (Giemsa staining, Ag-NOR, and C-banding).

Sex determination [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Multicellular animals are a diverse lot, with widely varied body plans and lifestyles. One feature they share, however, is a nearly universal reliance on sexual reproduction for species propagation.
