Menarche, pubertal timing and the brain: female-specific patterns of brain maturation beyond age-related development

open access: yesBiology of Sex Differences
Background Puberty depicts a period of profound and multifactorial changes ranging from social to biological factors. While brain development in youths has been studied mostly from an age perspective, recent evidence suggests that pubertal measures may ...

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.

The association between cannabis use and suicidal behavior in patients with psychiatric disorders: an analysis of sex differences

open access: yesBiology of Sex Differences, 2018
Background Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug. In the general population, its use has been linked to a heightened propensity for suicidal behavior (SB). We hypothesize that this association varies in patients with psychiatric disorders.

Crucial parameters for precise copy number variation detection in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded solid cancer samples

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that copy number variations (CNVs) can be reliably detected in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded (FFPE) solid cancer samples using ultra‐low‐pass whole‐genome sequencing, provided that key (pre)‐analytical parameters are optimized.

Gestational saccharin consumption disrupts gut-brain axis glucose homeostasis control in adolescent offspring rats in a sex-dependent manner

open access: yesBiology of Sex Differences
Background Certain events that occur in early life, such as changes in nutrition, can promote structural and functional modifications in brain development, projecting to either short, medium, and/or long terms, resulting in metabolic programming.

Association between cannabis use and methadone maintenance treatment outcomes: an investigation into sex differences

open access: yesBiology of Sex Differences, 2017
Background Cannabis will soon become legalized in Canada, and it is currently unclear how this will impact public health. Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) is the most common pharmacological treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD), and despite its ...

Correlation of the differential expression of PIK3R1 and its spliced variant, p55α, in pan‐cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PIK3R1 undergoes alternative splicing to generate the isoforms, p85α and p55α. By combining large patient datasets with laboratory experiments, we show that PIK3R1 spliced variants shape cancer behavior. While tumors lose the protective p85α isoform, p55α is overexpressed, changes linked to poorer survival and more pronounced in African American ...

Psychosocial and clinical characteristics in Takotsubo syndrome

open access: yesBiology of Sex Differences
Background Takotsubo Syndrome (TTS) is an acute form of heart failure that disproportionately impacts post-menopausal women. The brain-heart connection is considered a pathway for TTS pathophysiology leading to investigations of the role of psychological,
