Classic and Novel Sex Hormone Binding Globulin Effects on the Cardiovascular System in Men

open access: yesInternational Journal of Endocrinology, 2021
In men, 70% of circulating testosterone binds with high affinity to plasma sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which determines its bioavailability in their target cells.

Establishment of sex difference in circulating uric acid is associated with higher testosterone and lower sex hormone-binding globulin in adolescent boys

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Men have higher circulating levels of uric acid than women. This sex difference is suspected to be a result of suppressive effects of estradiol on uric acid. If so, estradiol would be inversely associated with circulating uric acid.

Long-Term Effects of a Randomised Controlled Trial Comparing High Protein or High Carbohydrate Weight Loss Diets on Testosterone, SHBG, Erectile and Urinary Function in Overweight and Obese Men. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
INTRODUCTION:Obesity is associated with reduced testosterone and worsened erectile and sexual function in men. Weight loss improves these outcomes.

Circulating Androgen Concentrations and Risk of Incident Heart Failure in Older Men: The Cardiovascular Health Study

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2022
Background Circulating androgen concentrations in men decline with age and have been linked to diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). A similar relationship has been reported for low total testosterone and incident heart failure (HF)

Avian corticosteroid-binding globulin: biological function and regulatory mechanisms in physiological stress responses

open access: yesFrontiers in Zoology, 2021
Corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) is a high-affinity plasma protein that binds glucocorticoids (GCs) and regulates their biological activities. The structural and functional properties of CBG are crucial to understanding the biological actions of GCs
