This chapter examines sexual selection. Like all other mammals, we are each male or female, and both must participate to produce offspring. Many other species, however, regularly reproduce with no appearance of either sex or gender. Sex is associated with reproduction in species like our own, but it is certainly not necessary for it.

Recent studies of a variety of polygynously mating animals indicate that females do not always choose mates independently, but instead may copy the choices of others. Copying could serve either to increase the accuracy of mate assessment or to reduce its costs. It is also likely to affect the intensity of sexual selection.
